Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day, known informally as Turkey Day, is a harvest festival celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving was a holiday to express thankfulness, gratitude, and appreciation to God, family and friends for which all have been blessed of material possessions and relationships. Traditionally, it has been a time to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. This holiday has since moved away from its religious roots.  In the United States, Thanksgiving Day falls on the fourth Thursday of November. In Canada it is celebrated on the second Monday in October.  The precise historical origin of the holiday is disputed. Although Americans commonly believe that the first Thanksgiving happened in 1621, at Plymouth Plantation, in Massachusetts, there is strong evidence for earlier celebrations in Canada (1578) and by Spanish explorers in Florida (1565). Thanksgiving Day is also celebrated in Leiden, in the Netherlands. A different holiday which uses the same name is celebrated at a similar time of year in the island of Grenada.

At last it is Thanksgiving. The air is cold and crisp, the leaves have all fallen off the trees, and the smells of the season fill the home. Despite the economy, despite the chaos that surrounds us, we are still a highly blessed country. We should never take our freedom for granted. Let us take this time to truly thank our Lord for the gifts He has given us. The family that is still with us, the memories of those that we lost, the beauty of our land, and wonder of our religion. Thank dear God for these blessings, and let us show Him how grateful we are by our actions and our good works. Never let us offend Him but give Him honor and glory each and every day.

O Lord, with humble hearts we pray

Thy blessing this Thanksgiving Day

And ask that at table place,

Where grateful folk say words of grace,

That Thou will come to share the yield

Thy bounty gave to farm and field.

We pray thy love will bless, O Lord,

Each hearth, each home, each festive board;

And that Thy peace will come to stay

WHY CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING DAY

History of Thanksgiving Day

Happy ThanksGiving Day!!

Happy ThanksGiving Day!!Thanksgiving Canada

                                         Over the River (Thanksgiving Day)

I found this little poem about Thanksgiving Day that I thought was nice and had potential to make a few small revisions to make it just a little more Jeep friendly for the holiday. :-) My revisions of course are in BOLD! Happy Thanksgiving day to you all!!!

Over the River (Thanksgiving Day)

Over the river and through the woods
To Grandmother’s house we go.
The horse (Jeep) knows the way
To carry the sleigh (to plow through the white and drifted snow)
Through white and drifted snow.

Over the river and through the woods
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes
And bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.

Over the river and through the woods
To have a (some Jeep fun) first-rate play.
Hear the (pistons churn) bells ring,
Ting-a-ling-ling! (and the engine hum)
Hurrah forThanksgiving Day!

Over the river and through the woods,
Trot fast, my dapple gray! (Tread through my able YJ)
Spring (Bound) over the ground
Like a hunting (hungry) hound,
For this is Thanksgiving Day.

Over the river and through the woods,
And straight through the barnyard gate (rocky terrain).
We seem to go
Extremely slow~
It is so hard to wait!

Over the river and through the wood~
Now Grandmother’s cap I spy!
Hurrah for fun!
Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!

Thanksgiving Day

Today is the Thanksgiving Day in Canada. Every year it’s celebrated on the second Monday of October. Since 1957 it has always been celebrated on that date in Canada. It’s a national public holiday; many people have a day off and many stores are closed on Thanksgiving Day. As it’s celebrated on Monday, people have a 3 day long weekend which is an oppurtunity to spend time with family.

Thanksgiving Day is time for family reunions! As part of the tradition all the family members unite and have a dinner together. Traditionally, roasted turkey and pumpkin pie are the stars of this dinner! The basic principle of this celebration is to thank God for an abundant and successful harvest of the past year. Besides turkey and pumpkin, large displays of food and the cornucopia ‘horn of plenty’ is other symbols of the Thanksgiving day. Cornucopia is the symbol of the bountiful harvest that Canadians celebrate.

Thanksgiving Day is the time for sharing and family reunions! As part of the celebrations parades also take place. As a special day, it functions as the medium to emphasize the importance of being thankful for what you have. Since it creates a long weekend, for some, it is also often a time for weekend getaways. It seems to me, Thanksgiving Day is a great time for bringing the families together , delicious thanksgiving recipes and its emphasis on being thankful! Happy thanksgiving day Canada!

The Meaning of Thanksgiving

Many Americans think of Thanksgiving as a wonderful time to take off work, celebrate a long weekend, eat a great dinner, visit with friends and family. I’ve even heard folks say; “Happy Turkey Day” on Thanksgiving and it leaves me wondering how many people have just plain forgotten the meaning of giving thanks and have reduced themselves to turkeys and turkey eaters on this day. To remember the real meaning behind Thanks Giving might then be one of the most important reasons we all need to give meaning to Thanksgiving Day…

Throughout our history we have had many wonderful reminders of the meaning and purpose of Thanksgiving Day. Some of these reminders are posted by a few of our early Pioneers and founding Fathers as follows:

“All ye Pilgrims with your wives and little ones, do gather at the Meeting House, on the hill… there to listen to the pastor, and render Thanksgiving to the Almighty God for all His blessings…”
~1620 Governor William Bradford leader of the Pilgrim Colony

“That with one heart and one voice the good people may express the grateful feelings of their hearts, and consecrate themselves to the service of their Divine Benefactor, and their humble and earnest supplication that it may please God…”
~1777 Congress of the United States first National Thanksgiving Proclamation

“Our duty as a people, with devout reverence and affectionate gratitude, to acknowledge our many and great obligations to Almighty God, and to implore Him to continue and confirm the blessings we experienced…”
~January 1, 1795 George Washington first United States President set aside Thursday, the 19th day of February, 1795 as a National Day of Thanksgiving

“Announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, by the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people…”
